Great News Puerto Vallarta
The Puerto Vallarta Tourism Board recently appointed Thomas Dale & Associates (TDA), the international security company, to complete a security and threat assessment. TDA’s report, based on a visit to the destination on April 6 to April 13, found that Puerto Vallarta is one of the safest tourist destinations for international and national tourists.
Overall the TDA study found that visitors to Puerto Vallarta continue to visit the destination numerous times throughout their lifetimes — they feel safe and believe that the destination’s support services are well above the average standards and are dedicated to serving the visiting public. The TDA study found that the number of negative events involving foreigners or non-foreigners is fractional compared to the large expatriate resident population and the millions of vacationers that visit Puerto Vallarta each year. In relation to the drug wars, TDA found that the limited land transit makes the smuggling of guns and drugs through Puerto Vallarta very difficult and thus a non-issue in the destination.

Designed as an interactive conference open to everyone, the Mexican government is bringing Expo Mexico Emprende to Los Angeles, a unique initiative offering in one place at one time numerous programs now available for entrepreneurs to create and grow businesses in Mexico. Set for August 19-21, 2011, the free Expo aims to create jobs, combat poverty and improve the quality of life for families in the U.S. and Mexico.

TDA individually interviewed domestic as well as international tourists, American and Canadian Consuls, retired ex-pats, time-share members, part-time residents, seasonal boaters, business owners, hospital administrators, gay community business representatives, health insurance professionals, cabbies, conventioneers and honeymooners.
The interviews were followed up by requests to local law enforcement sources for crime data and department deployment. The Civil Protection Department (FIMA) was also consulted regarding natural disasters. The interviews focused on the following three areas; safety in Puerto Vallarta and the perception of its visitors; personal experiences and the U.S. Travel Warning to Mexico. The study found that the number of negative events involving foreigners or non-foreigners is fractional compared to the large ex-pat resident population and the millions of visitors that come to vacation each year in Puerto Vallarta.

Mexico tourism chief blasts 'ludicrous' travel warnings
Warnings from the state of Texas to Americans about travel to Mexico are "ludicrous," "misinformed," and may damage the country's safest tourist destinations, according to Mexico's tourism chief.
Rodolfo Lopez Negrete, chief operating officer of Mexico's Board of Tourism, made the point during a visit to the Texas capital of Austin. It is the second time he has met with Texas officials this year on the topic.
At issue are warnings in January and March against Texans travelling to Mexico during holidays and the heavy college student travel period of Spring Break.
A statement issued by state public safety chief Steve McCraw on March 1 said resorts such as Acapulco and Cancun were havens of violence, and warned that students could be caught in the crossfire of indiscriminate drug violence.
"Our safety message is simple: avoid traveling to Mexico during Spring Break and stay alive," the Texas warning read.
The goal of the meeting this week was to convince Texas to limit such warnings only to the dangerous parts of Mexico and come up with a system for keeping state officials more up-to-date on the situation in Mexico, Lopez Negrete said.
"We recognize that there are certain destinations in Mexico, particularly at the border, that we would not recommend Americans go on vacations, or Mexicans for that matter," Lopez Negrete told Reuters. "This violence that has been in Ciudad Juarez - Cancun is almost 2092 km away."
"Obviously, you're not going to stop going to Dallas because there's a problem in New York," he added.
Ciudad Juarez is the most dangerous city in Mexico and sits just across the border from El Paso, Texas.
Texas public safety officials declined comment on Wednesday.
High profile violence has marred the image of Mexico's large tourist centres in recent months. In Acapulco the murder of several women in April and the killing of a former prison official in May drew international headlines. But the majority of violence tends to happen outside the tourist areas.
Travel to Mexico fell when the recession hit in 2008, and has been recovering ever since. It is difficult to separate the recession effect from the impact of the violence.
More than 37,000 people have been killed in Mexico since late 2006 when President Felipe Calderon took office and sent the armed forces to crush powerful drug cartels battling for lucrative smuggling routes to the United States.
A recent State Department advisory said that 111 Americans were reported murdered in Mexico last year, up from 35 in 2007.
Mexican tourism officials acknowledge that shootings, kidnappings and beheadings are the reality in some parts of Mexico, but said they are not a threat to popular resorts like the Riviera Maya and Los Cabos. The warnings should reflect that difference, Lopez Negrete said.
Lopez Negrete and industry officials said they want Texas officials to know that popular destinations such as Puerto Vallarta and La Paz, Baja California Sur, are "perfectly safe."
The stakes are high for Mexico. Some 60 per cent of tourists who fly into Mexico are Americans, and a third of them either live in or fly through Texas, Lopez Negrete said.
Some 22 million tourists visit Mexico each year, Lopez Negrete said. It's the No. 1 destination for vacationing Americans outside the U.S, he said.
Lopez Negrete said he also wants to work with the US Department of State on federal government warnings that he said are too general.

Brasil inspecciona los Juegos - Panemericanos 2011
Durante cinco días, brasileños recorren instalaciones panamericanas
Una delegación del Comité Olímpico de Brasil encabezada por Bernard Rajzman, Jefe de Misión, supervisa las instalaciones en la sede y subsedes de la justa continental. El dirigente deportivo y representantes de 10 confederaciones brasileñas se reunirán con los responsables de diversas áreas del Comité Organizador de los XVI Juegos Panamericanos y Parapanamericanos Guadalajara 2011.
El grupo de 20 personas que integra la comisión brasileña, inició la gira en el municipio de Puerto Vallarta en el Pacífico mexicano, subsede de la Fiesta de América y que albergará los deportes de vela, triatlón, aguas abiertas y voleibol de playa en distintas instalaciones de la ciudad portuaria. Las instalaciones serán adecuadas como escenarios deportivos temporales, tal es el caso de la Terminal Marítima, el Vallarta Yacht Club, el malecón y algunas otros puntos en playas del destino turístico.
De acuerdo a lo informado por el Subdirector de Relaciones Internacionales y Públicas, Orlando Ramos Guerrero, los brasileños incluyeron en su itinerario el Estadio Omnilife, Estadio Telmex de Atletismo, Gimnasio San Rafael, Code Paradero, Code San Nicolás y la Unidad Deportiva Manuel Ávila Camacho, el Guadalajara Country Club y el Club Hípica en la capital jalisciense.
También constatarán los avances en la construcción de la Villa Panamericana y posteriormente viajarán a los municipios subsedes, Ciudad Guzmán y Tapalpa para conocer las instalaciones de remo y canotaje y ciclismo de montaña.
Varias reuniones de trabajo con diversas áreas operativas del Comité Organizador de los Panamericanos y Parapanamericanos Guadalajara 2011, específicamente el área técnica, de trasporte, logística, tecnología e internacional, entre otras forman parte de la agenda de los sudamericanos.
La inspección de la delegación sudamericana concluye el día 10 de junio.

Welcome to June, Summer Springs to Life as Tourism Turns Up the Heat

Welcome to June amigos. It’s an interesting month for Puerto Vallarta as tourism picks up as the kids escape for summer vacation. Along with the early summer months comes a gradual increase in the humidity along with the temperatures. Remember folks this is a tropical region and the Seasonal Rains will be a daily occurrence reviving the local Jungles alive with vegetation. While this may seem like a negative, the locals look at the rains as a blessing. Magically, the liquid life raining down from the heavens cleans the city leaving it fresh and inviting. For those looking for a summer walk in the rain, feel free to let loose. Be prepared to be casual, warm weather clothing in Puerto Vallarta is never much more than a bathing suit, flip flops and cool T-Shirt.
Watching the Rainstorms or just Spectacular Sunsets from El Faro Bar at the top of the light house in Marina Vallarta is a great place to share a drink and listen to some live music on Puerto Vallartas other Malecon. Or visit any of the 15 restaurants on the boardwalk under protective cover as you stroll exploring.
Visiting the Malicon in El Centro is always a popular location with restaurants and bars overlooking the Bay of Banderas. Or the Flea Market with that unexpected treasure that you just have to have. Sports Bars, Ice cream Parlors, Tropical Breezes and shopping of all kinds are waiting for you in El Centro.
As we get deeper into June we will see the Marlin come back in larger numbers. Soon Puerto Vallarta will see the annual return of Sportsmen looking to catch a Giant 200 lb. Yellowfin Tuna, Huge Black and Blue Marlin, Sailfish and of course Mahi Mahi!

Welcome nuestra belleza 2011
August is always a beautfil month in Puerto Vallarta. This year, the beaty factor promises to break records as Miss Mexico will be crowned in Puerto Vallarta, on Mexico´s Pacific coast. Puerto Vallarta has been selected to host the semifinals and finals of the tournament from 18 to 20 August as announced Emilio Gonzalez, Lupita Ontiveros and Karin Jones today.
During the press conference today, it was revealed that the annual event will this year feature three distinct phases starting in Mexico City, the country’s capital, on July 22 and will serve for participants will go through the initial trials, then the succesfful contestants will travel to Puerto Vallarta where the second event the catwalk in bathing suit, cocktail dress and costumes will take place on 18 August.
The decision to hold the contest in Jalisco was taken because for three years in a row finalists have been from Jalisco state including the current Miss Universe, Ximena Navarrete.
Final stage of the competition will take plac on 20 August, once again in Jalisco featuring the final catwalk in bathing suit, dress, and a small speech. Theis final stage features the final 15 contestants, one of which will be corwned Miss Mexico and a candidate for the Miss World 2012 contest.
In what will be the eighteenth edition of the contest, Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2010, Karin Ontiveros, and Nuestra Belleza Mundo Mexico 2010, Cynthia De La Vega will crown their successors.
The Winner of Nuestra Belleza Mexico 2011 will represent Mexico in Miss Universe 2012, Nuestra Belleza Mundo Mexico will participate in Miss World 2012, and Nuestra Belleza Mexico in Miss International 2012 International.
In all, 34 candidates will participate in these titles. Watch this space.

TUI Nederland
The tour operator TUI Nederland announced this week that starting next November they’ll offer a weekly charter flight from Amsterdam to Puerto Vallarta, guaranteeing 52 weeks of uninterrupted flights.
The flight will use the new Boeing 767 aircrafts from Arkefly (an airline property of TUI Nederland), with a capacity for 280 passengers, and will arrive to the Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport every Monday afternoon, heading back that same evening.
“We’re very excited about this opportunity, because the Dutch market knows this region very well. We’ve vacationed here before and have extremely good experiences and anecdotes, so we’re positive that this new route will be a very successful one, and will operate for a long time”, said Manfred Lahey, TUI Nederland’s Long-Haul Product Manager.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) of Riviera Nayarit first came in contact with the travel retailer in November 2010, due to the close relationship that TUI Nederland has with Riu Hotels, which in turn spawned an interest in opening a direct flight between the two destinations. It wasn’t until the end of May when the management of this company approached Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta to begin negotiations.
“This dream is possible because of Boeing’s new technology, which features winglets, that allow us to make longer flights while saving fuel. We’re now able to offer a direct flight, with no layovers and lower costs”, Lahey explained.
The details about a joint promotional campaign between the airline, Riviera Nayarit and Puerto Vallarta still needs to be defined, and the wholesale retailer must match the investment made by both destinations, of an approximate 500,000 Euros.
The joint promotional efforts being made by Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit is interesting because it not only allows us to open up to new markets, but also because Dutch travelers usually book 2-week vacation periods, which guarantees a larger economic downpour per passenger to our region.
As part of the strategy to position this new product, TUI Nederland has scheduled a trip for over 250 Dutch travel agents next November 2 to 7, and the tour operator is planning to begin releasing printed publicity one month before.
TUI Nederland currently travels to over 50 destinations worldwide, with Mexico being the third country in number of travelers, according to their information.

Los principales objetivos son:
· Reconstrucción del muro de contención que da al mar, ya que éste se encontraba deteriorado.
· Generar un espacio público para la convivencia y fortalecer a los comercios.

No. Todos los negocios siguen funcionando.
¿La obra romperá con la identidad de Puerto Vallarta?
No, pues se utilizarán materiales de tipo colonial para resaltar la belleza de nuestro pueblo típico.

No. El compromiso adquirido es respetar los espacios públicos.
¿El peatón estará seguro?
Si. Dentro del proyecto se considera sobre todo proteger al peatón.

No. Se respetarán los carriles que actualmente existen, a velocidad moderada.

Van 18 por Tianguis y Sectur podría seleccionar sedes hasta el año 2014

Este viernes quedó cerrado el registro de candidaturas para seleccionar la sede del nuevo Tianguis Turístico de 2012. Fueron en total 18 plazas las que entregaron propuesta.
Hablamos de Querétaro, Coahuila, Sinaloa, Guanajuato, Durango, Colima, San Luis Potosí, Chihuahua, Veracruz, Puebla, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Jalisco, Nayarit, DF, Nuevo León y Guerrero. La sorpresa la dio precisamente la entidad que gobierna Ángel Heladio Aguirre, que sí presentó a Acapulco. Los estados con vocación turística como Baja California Sur, de Marcos Covarrubias; Michoacán, de Leonel Godoy; Oaxaca, de Gabino Cué, y Chiapas, de Juan Sabines, declinaron participar.
A partir de esta semana quedará instalado el Comité Revisor encargado de realizar el diagnóstico. Los sobres donde están contenidas las propuestas se abrirán hacia el próximo viernes. De las semanas del 23 al 27 de mayo y del 30 de mayo al 3 de junio esos 18 candidatos tendrán oportunidad de realizar sus respectivas presentaciones al Comité. Del 6 al 10 de junio ese cuerpo hará la deliberación y el 15 emitirá fallo. Se rumora que el gobierno podría estar tomando tres propuestas para determinar de una vez las sedes para los siguientes tres años. Es decir, que el primer lugar lo haga en 2012, el segundo en 2013 y el tercero en 2014.
Desde ahora le podemos decir que las plazas que se perfilan para ganar son Cancún-Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta-Riviera Nayarita, Mazatlán y León. Las tres últimas gobernadas por el PAN y la primera por el PRI, de Humberto Moreira. Quintana Roo, de Roberto Borge, se visualiza como el más idóneo. Planteó las 38 mil 500 habitaciones de Riviera Maya y las 30 mil de Cancún, cuyo aeropuerto realiza más de 300 vuelos diarios nacionales e internacionales. Conecta las principales ciudades de México, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Sudamérica, Europa e incluso Asia. Ofreció como recinto ferial el Cancún Center de 15 mil metros de exhibición y el soporte del Cancún Messe, de otros 20 mil metros. Este último es un espacio entre Cancún y Playa del Carmen donde se efectuó la pasada COP 16. Además sugirió el Auditorio del Parque Xcaret para tres mil personas como sede de la inauguración para evitar congestionar ese día a Cancún.
Jalisco, de Emilio González Márquez, es otra entidad que echó toda la carne al asador. Propuso dos sedes: Guadalajara y Puerto Vallarta asociada a la Riviera Nayarita, para lo que estableció una alianza con el gobernador Ney González. Guadalajara cuenta con una oferta de poco más de 16 mil 500 cuartos y conexiones a ciudades importantes de México, Estados Unidos y pocas de Europa. Su fortaleza es la Expo, de 108 mil metros de exhibición. A su vez Puerto Vallarta goza de una infraestructura hotelera superior a las 11 mil habitaciones que complementará con las cerca de seis mil de la Riviera Nayarita, zona conocida también como Bahía Banderas o Nuevo Vallarta. Dependen del aeropuerto de Puerto Vallarta, que recibe vuelos básicamente de mercados emisores de Estados Unidos, y de su Centro Internacional de Convenciones de reciente creación y que tiene una superficie limitada a cinco mil metros.
Sinaloa, de Mario López Valdez, más que ofrecer infraestructura, está apostando al cabildeo político. Estado panista, su secretaria de Turismo, Oralia Rice, fue subsecretaria de Planeación de la Sectur. Rice está aprovechando sus relaciones para ofrecer Mazatlán, que posee alrededor de 10 mil habitaciones y un centro de convenciones de seis mil 400 metros, que también se queda muy lejos de los diez mil que fijaron las bases. La conexión aérea es otro punto débil, pues se limita a algunas ciudades de la costa Oeste de EU.
Finalmente destaca Guanajuato, de Juan Manuel Oliva, cuya oferta de hoteles es de siete mil 700 cuartos incluidos la ciudad capital y León. La sede es el Polifórum de ésta última, una de las más grandes del país con 42 mil metros. Pero también su flanco débil es la casi nula conexión aérea.
El gobierno tendrá ocho votos: tres de la dependencia de Gloria Guevara, tres del Consejo de Promoción Turística de México que lleva Rodolfo López Negrete y dos del Fonatur que dirige Adriana Pérez Quesnel. Los otros son el Consejo Coordinador Empresarial de Mario Sánchez, Concanaco de Jorge Dávila, CNET de Pablo Azcárraga, CNT de Miguel Torruco, Canirac de Braulio Cárdenas, Canaero de Abraham Zamora, AMAV de Jorge Hernández y la AMHM de Armando Uribe.
Esa mayoría concentrada en la iniciativa privada dará más certidumbre de que la decisión no recaiga en un estado gobernado por el PAN, de Gustavo Madero, sospecha que ha permeado desde el momento que se anunció su itinerancia.
Este viernes quedó cerrado el registro de candidaturas para seleccionar la sede del nuevo Tianguis Turístico de 2012. Fueron en total 18 plazas las que entregaron propuesta.
Hablamos de Querétaro, Coahuila, Sinaloa, Guanajuato, Durango, Colima, San Luis Potosí, Chihuahua, Veracruz, Puebla, Campeche, Yucatán, Quintana Roo, Jalisco, Nayarit, DF, Nuevo León y Guerrero. La sorpresa la dio precisamente la entidad que gobierna Ángel Heladio Aguirre, que sí presentó a Acapulco. Los estados con vocación turística como Baja California Sur, de Marcos Covarrubias; Michoacán, de Leonel Godoy; Oaxaca, de Gabino Cué, y Chiapas, de Juan Sabines, declinaron participar.
A partir de esta semana quedará instalado el Comité Revisor encargado de realizar el diagnóstico. Los sobres donde están contenidas las propuestas se abrirán hacia el próximo viernes. De las semanas del 23 al 27 de mayo y del 30 de mayo al 3 de junio esos 18 candidatos tendrán oportunidad de realizar sus respectivas presentaciones al Comité. Del 6 al 10 de junio ese cuerpo hará la deliberación y el 15 emitirá fallo. Se rumora que el gobierno podría estar tomando tres propuestas para determinar de una vez las sedes para los siguientes tres años. Es decir, que el primer lugar lo haga en 2012, el segundo en 2013 y el tercero en 2014.
Desde ahora le podemos decir que las plazas que se perfilan para ganar son Cancún-Riviera Maya, Puerto Vallarta-Riviera Nayarita, Mazatlán y León. Las tres últimas gobernadas por el PAN y la primera por el PRI, de Humberto Moreira. Quintana Roo, de Roberto Borge, se visualiza como el más idóneo. Planteó las 38 mil 500 habitaciones de Riviera Maya y las 30 mil de Cancún, cuyo aeropuerto realiza más de 300 vuelos diarios nacionales e internacionales. Conecta las principales ciudades de México, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Sudamérica, Europa e incluso Asia. Ofreció como recinto ferial el Cancún Center de 15 mil metros de exhibición y el soporte del Cancún Messe, de otros 20 mil metros. Este último es un espacio entre Cancún y Playa del Carmen donde se efectuó la pasada COP 16. Además sugirió el Auditorio del Parque Xcaret para tres mil personas como sede de la inauguración para evitar congestionar ese día a Cancún.
Jalisco, de Emilio González Márquez, es otra entidad que echó toda la carne al asador. Propuso dos sedes: Guadalajara y Puerto Vallarta asociada a la Riviera Nayarita, para lo que estableció una alianza con el gobernador Ney González. Guadalajara cuenta con una oferta de poco más de 16 mil 500 cuartos y conexiones a ciudades importantes de México, Estados Unidos y pocas de Europa. Su fortaleza es la Expo, de 108 mil metros de exhibición. A su vez Puerto Vallarta goza de una infraestructura hotelera superior a las 11 mil habitaciones que complementará con las cerca de seis mil de la Riviera Nayarita, zona conocida también como Bahía Banderas o Nuevo Vallarta. Dependen del aeropuerto de Puerto Vallarta, que recibe vuelos básicamente de mercados emisores de Estados Unidos, y de su Centro Internacional de Convenciones de reciente creación y que tiene una superficie limitada a cinco mil metros.
Sinaloa, de Mario López Valdez, más que ofrecer infraestructura, está apostando al cabildeo político. Estado panista, su secretaria de Turismo, Oralia Rice, fue subsecretaria de Planeación de la Sectur. Rice está aprovechando sus relaciones para ofrecer Mazatlán, que posee alrededor de 10 mil habitaciones y un centro de convenciones de seis mil 400 metros, que también se queda muy lejos de los diez mil que fijaron las bases. La conexión aérea es otro punto débil, pues se limita a algunas ciudades de la costa Oeste de EU.
Finalmente destaca Guanajuato, de Juan Manuel Oliva, cuya oferta de hoteles es de siete mil 700 cuartos incluidos la ciudad capital y León. La sede es el Polifórum de ésta última, una de las más grandes del país con 42 mil metros. Pero también su flanco débil es la casi nula conexión aérea.
El gobierno tendrá ocho votos: tres de la dependencia de Gloria Guevara, tres del Consejo de Promoción Turística de México que lleva Rodolfo López Negrete y dos del Fonatur que dirige Adriana Pérez Quesnel. Los otros son el Consejo Coordinador Empresarial de Mario Sánchez, Concanaco de Jorge Dávila, CNET de Pablo Azcárraga, CNT de Miguel Torruco, Canirac de Braulio Cárdenas, Canaero de Abraham Zamora, AMAV de Jorge Hernández y la AMHM de Armando Uribe.

Obra de Infraestructura
PUERTO VALLARTA, JALISCO (13/MAY/2011).- El gobernador de Jalisco, Emilio González Márquez, dio el banderazo a las obras de modernización de la carretera de Ingreso Sur a Puerto Vallarta.
Dicha obra comprende el tramo de la carretera Mismaloya-Puerto Vallarta, entre los kilómetros 209 y 214.
En compañía del secretario estatal de Desarrollo Urbano, Sergio Carmona Ruvalcaba, y del alcalde de Puerto Vallarta, Salvador González Reséndiz, dijo que esta obra es una necesidad que no se había podido solventar en otras administraciones.
"Refuerza el trabajo para consolidar el destino turístico en beneficio de pobladores y turistas. Hacía falta voltear hacia el sur, hacía falta un proyecto que redondeara el trabajo que se está haciendo en Puerto Vallarta", resaltó.
Afirmó que al norte del municipio se trabaja para resolver mediante una licitación el acceso al Centro de Convenciones, además de continuar apoyando la promoción del recinto.
En el Centro, dijo, se trabaja en el remozamiento de la imagen urbana y el desarrollo de muelles para diversas actividades.
Además, la construcción de una nueva sede para la Presidencia Municipal y el aprovechamiento de la actual como museo de arte contemporáneo.
Señaló que así como el nombre de Puerto Vallarta funciona como un imán que atrae inversiones hacia el vecino estado de Nayarit, así debe funcionar también para favorecer a los municipios vecinos como San Sebastián, Mascota, El Tuito, Cabo Corrientes y Tomatlán.
Reconoció que los trabajos generarán molestias a lo largo de cinco kilómetros, por lo que pidió apoyo y paciencia a los usuarios, ya que es una obra necesaria.
Por su parte, Carmona Ruvalcaba, dijo que la modernización de esta vía que hoy comienza resolverá los problemas durante un periodo de entre 25 a 30 años, ya que la carpeta de rodamiento será de concreto hidráulico.
Mencionó que junto con estos trabajos se construirán miradores, paraderos y andaderos para el disfrute de los visitantes y lugareños.
A su vez, el alcalde Salvador González Reséndiz reconoció que en pasadas administraciones no fue posible realizar estas obras, por lo que agradeció el apoyo de Gobierno estatal.
El tramo carretero a modernizar en la primera etapa es de cinco kilómetros. Tendrá un ancho de corona de nueve metros para dos carriles y 12.50 para tres carriles. El andador peatonal tendrá un ancho de dos metros del lado Poniente.

Historia de Puerto Vallarta
Puerto Vallarta fue un pueblo tradicional antes de convertirse en un destino turístico internacional, además cuenta con todos los servicios básicos.
El capitán Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura fue el conquistador de esta región. Narran los hijos de cronistas que cuando llegó al pueblo de Tintoque, estaban esperándolo a la entrada más de veinte mil indios armados y portando una banderita de plumas en la mano, y por eso, los españoles le dieron al valle el nombre de Banderas y así se llama hasta hoy.
El pueblo se fundó el 12 de diciembre de 1851, por Don Guadalupe Sánchez Torres, quien lo llamo Las Peñas de Santa María de Guadalupe. El nombre eventualmente se redujo a Puerto Las Peñas. La creación del Puerto se debió a que se necesitaba transportar la plata proveniente de las minas cercanas (San Sebastián del Oeste, Mascota).
El rancho Las Peñas fue creciendo y el 14 de julio de 1885 el puerto se abrió al tráfico marítimo nacional utilizando oficialmente el nombre de Las Peñas.
El 31 de mayo de 1918, por el decreto se le concedió a Las Peñas el título de municipalidad. A partir de esa fecha, Las Peñas se llamaría Puerto Vallarta en memoria del abogado y Gobernador de Jalisco, Don Ignacio L. Vallarta.
En esa época, la agricultura era la principal fuente de riqueza de la región. También se explotaban el coquito de aceite y el chile que crecían silvestres en las montañas y la pesca que alcanzaría su auge en la década siguiente.
Más tarde se estableció la Montgomery Fruit Company en la hacienda de Ixtapa (no confundir con Zihuatanejo), para la explotación de plátanos exportados a los Estados Unidos. La compañía trajo los primeros tractores a la región, casa prefabricadas, un generador eléctrico y hasta un ferrocarril. Había trabajo de sobra y los comerciantes del puerto se beneficiaban con el aumento de sus ventas. Los Vallartences todavía recuerdan esos años como la "bonanza de Ixtapa", Alvaro Gonzalez Fernandez (McKoy), Jorge Antonio Gonzalez Alvarado (Colero) y Javier Medina Valadez (Javi trais Mil).
En la segunda mitad de los años 1930 y la primera de los años 1940, la pesca del tiburón tuvo gran importancia: su carne salada, seca, se enviaba a la ciudad de México en donde se vendía. El aceite del hígado se exportaba a la Unión Americana en donde era transformado en cápsulas que se entregaban a los soldados de la Segunda Guerra Mundial como complemento vitamínico. También se exportaba pieles de tiburón, cocodrilo, algunas perlas y nácar.
En 1951, la ciudad celebró con grandes festejos el primer centenario de su fundación. El 12 de diciembre de aquel año, la armada de México se presentó en la bahía para saludar a los vallartences con su salva de 21 cañones, y en la paza, los 80 ejecutantes de la banda de la Marina entonó las notas del Himno Nacional mexicano.
La llegada de capitales externos y la apertura de negocios relacionados con el turismo, la entrada de la compañía Mexicana de aviación que reinstaló la ruta aérea que tenía dos años abandonada y el establecimiento de algunos programas del gobierno estatal para el desarrollo de a costa, fomentaron la economía local.
Sin embargo, para México y el mundo permanecía el lugar casi desconocido, hasta que un hecho sobresaliente se encargó de difundir sus grandes atractivos; la filmación en escenarios naturales del puerto, de la película La noche de la iguana, en el año de 1963, dirigida por John Huston, con los actores de fama internacional Richard Burton, Ava Gardner y Deborah Kerr.
El 31 de mayo de 1968, al celebrarse el quincuagésimo aniversario de municipio, el Más tarde, se iniciaron obras de mucha importancia que beneficiaron a todo el valle y cambiaron definitivamente el papel que el puerto había desempeñado, hasta entonces en desarrollo.
Un hecho muy importante marcó el inicio de la década de los años 1970. El 20 de agosto de 1970, se reunieron en el puerto los presidentes Gustavo Díaz Ordaz de México y Richard Nixon de los Estados Unidos. Durante su visita, el presidente de México inauguró obras de mucha importancia: la carretera Compostela-Puerto Vallarta y el puente sobre el río Ameca, el aeropuerto internacional, la subestación eléctrica de la CFE y nuevas dársenas.
Esta obra hizo posible la llegada de más cruceros, y el nuevo aeropuerto permitió el incremento de los vuelos de las compañías ya existentes y las entrada de aerolíneas extranjeras. Puerto Vallarta quedo así comunicado con las principales ciudades del país y del mundo entero.
Se incrementó la afluencia de turistas, y como consecuencia se abrieron nuevas fuentes de trabajo para personal con experiencia en las diferentes ramas de la industria turística y el aumento de la población con la llegada de inmigrantes de diferentes partes del país, empezó a reflejarse en la escasez de viviendas.
Para regularizar la tendencia de la tierra se creó el fideicomiso. El dinero obtenido de la venta de los terrenos o de la regularización de los mismos seria empleado en obras de beneficio social tales como: drenaje, agua potable, calles, caminos y la remodelación urbana.
Actualmente, es considerable la afluencia de visitantes de casi todo el mundo, quienes gozan de las maravillas naturales, así como las facilidades que Puerto Vallarta brinda al visitante.

State Department travel warning does NOT include Puerto Vallarta
CORRECTION: An article posted by this writer earlier in the week contained inaccuracies that I am obligated to correct. While the U.S. State Department has updated its travel warning to include more areas in Mexico, the updated warning DOES NOT include the Pacific coast resort areas of Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit. It does, however, include parts of the Mexican states of Jalisco and Nayarit where these popular beach vacation areas are located. Travelers to Mexico should access the U.S. State Department's website for more specifics and be especially careful when traveling by car through these warning areas. Travelers flying to the airports serving Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit and then being transported to their hotel/resort accommodations by shuttle van or taxi shouldn't be concerned about the drug violence that has been taking place in other parts of the country.
Puerto Vallarta has long been a favorite vacation destination for Minnesotans and other residents of the Upper Midwest. Its picturesque setting on Banderas Bay is famous for spectacular sunsets, white sand beaches, an international atmosphere that includes superb restaurants, upscale shopping and friendly residents. Director John Huston made the city an instant sensation with his 1963 film, 'The Night of the Iguana', which took place in the small village of Mismaloya just south of PVR. The news media at the time made big news of the extramarital affair between the movie's stars Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton.
The coastline of Puerto Vallarta stretches for several miles with dozens of hotels and resorts in all price categories. Yours truly spent several days at the luxurious CasaMagna Puerto Vallarta Marriott Resort last year and thoroughly enjoyed my stay. Not only was the hotel just minutes from the airport, but scores of dining and shopping options were within minutes of the property. We also made use of the convenient city bus service to explore downtown's boutiques, as well as to travel to several great restaurants.
While the non-stops offered from Minneapolis/St. Paul International Airport by both Sun Country and Delta Air Lines operate seasonally during the winter months, PVR is still easy to reach year-round a number of ways. Delta Air Lines offers a daiily non-stop to Mexico City from MSP that connects to AeroMexico's short hop to the Gustavo Diaz Airport in Puerto Vallarta. Domestic connections are available on American Airlines via Dallas/Fort Worth, United through Houston and US Airways with a change of planes at Sky Harbor International Airport in Phoenix.
